Grieving the death of a loved one is difficult, especially for a child. Grieving children are likely to feel different and alone. Recognizing the need to help children through the grieving process, Community Hospice & Palliative Care established Camp Healing Powers, a therapeutic camp open to any child ages 7 to 17 who is grieving the death of a loved one. Mental health professionals who specialize in grief and bereavement plan and lead camp activities that help children identify and express their feelings and learn skills to help them navigate the grief journey in a safe, supportive and fun environment.

Mayo Clinic is offering Children’s Lives Include Moments of Bravery (CLIMB) to children and families in the Jacksonville area. The CLIMB program is a 4- to 6-week educational support group that teaches younger children how to cope when a loved one has cancer. It incorporates peer support, interactive activities, and artistic projects designed to help young children process their feelings. It includes a companion support group for adult caregivers, which teaches participants how to respond when children express their feelings. The CLIMB program is designed for children, ages 6 to 12; however, participation in the group is not limited based on the child’s age, nor is participation restricted to children in a specific age range. Interested parties are encouraged to contact the Mayo Clinic directly if they have questions (see contact information below).
The Mayo Clinic is offering the CLIMB program – free of charge – to anyone in the community, not just to those receiving treatment at Mayo’s cancer center. The group meets Tuesdays, from 5:30 to 7:00PM, and includes a family-style dinner served at the beginning of each meeting. Although Mayo Clinic is offering CLIMB at no cost to participants, registration is required. For more information, please contact Autumn Jones:
